The new 30 Sedan from Cutwater Boats is a compact, purposeful and efficient vessel that makes ingenious use of both on-deck and interior space. She comes from the Cutwater division of Fluid Motion, which also builds Ranger Tugs.

The 30 Sedan’s stepped-keel hull is a burly, high-tech combination of air steps, keel pad and long waterline, with a short keel that allows low placement of a 370-hp Volvo D6 electronic diesel inboard. She runs efficiently at a wide range of speeds from 7 mph (about 1 gph fuel burn) to 23 mph (about 15 gph), with a top speed around 28 mph. Bow and stern thrusters make close maneuvering easy and precise.

Accommodations include a cockpit that can seat eight. This apparent sleight-of-hand comes from four elements: a reversible transom double seat that can face aft on the swim platform or forward, with a folding table; a reversible double seat on the folding starboard cabin bulkhead that can serve the saloon’s dinette or face aft into the cockpit; and a pair of fold-out “wings” in the cockpit sides.

The saloon and cabin likewise feature versatility. To port in the former are a full galley that can hide under a folding counter and a companion lounge just aft of the cabin bulkhead; to starboard are a four-person dinette that converts to a double bunk, with a compact double berth/storage space below and a seamanlike helm with double seat. The forward cabin includes an asymmetrical island double berth and an enclosed head with a clear sliding door to enclose the shower.

Base price for the Cutwater 30 Sedan is $279,937; Local dealer: Pocket-Yacht Company, Grasonville, Md. 410-827-5230;
