One of the marks of a good boatbuilder is the ability to take the best of a successful model and update it as new technology and equipment become available. Regal's new 38 Express is a good example.

Based on the 3760 Commodore, the 38 is now available with twin 260-hp Volvo D4 electronic diesels turning DuoProp outdrives with optional joystick low-speed maneuvering. These engines are compact, clean and efficient. The performance they offer is remarkable: cruising speeds from the upper 20s to the low 30s with fuel consumption of 16- to 18 gallons per hour. An optional 8-kilowatt Kohler diesel generator with sound shield joins them in a spacious engine room beneath an electrically operated rear hatch.

The 38 Express offers sleeping accommodations for two in the bow stateroom, two in the mid-cabin beneath the helm deck and two on the convertible salon settee. An optional hardtop with windows covers the helm, the adjacent half-circular seating area to port and day galley. There's also an optional convertible seat/sunpad at the aft end of the cockpit. The 38 Express retains important features from the Commodore, like centerline steps from the helm deck through the windshield to the foredeck.

Base price for the Regal 38 Express with twin 260-hp Volvo D4 diesels turning DuoProp outdrives, with joystick maneuvering, is $499,870. Figure on another $50,000 for desirable accessories like an 8-kilowatt Kohler diesel generator, the hardtop with windows, radar, central vacuum system, gas grill, graywater system and bottom paint.
