For its first 25 years, Regulator Marine built a great reputation for seaworthy, durable offshore center console fishing and family boats. For that quarter-century, its signature hull was the lovely, classic Regulator 26, designed by Lou Codega and built by Regulator’s crews. Codega has gone on to design both larger and smaller Regulators, but the 26 has remained the company’s touchstone.

Until now. Codega is the first to say that the experience of designing newer Regulator models has taught him some things. Meanwhile, composite construction has evolved, and outboard engines have gone through a complete revolution in that time.

Enter the 2014 Regulator 25, with the same 24-degree deadrise as the 26 and an Armstrong bracket fitted to the full transom, but 4 inches wider, with a subtly more rounded shape, forward seating, and a standup head in the console. Modern composite materials and a new, light-but-powerful, four-cylinder, 200-hp Yamaha four-stroke outboard model have allowed Codega to balance the 25 so that she cruises efficiently at speeds from the low 20s to the upper 30s (peak is around 31 mph), with a top speed of 50 mph.

With 25 years of experience, the Regulator/Codega partnership knows what their customers need in fishing and family features—from fishboxes, livewells and seating to tackle stations, lockable rod storage and a (removable) forward sun bed. The new 25 looks like a worthy successor to the legendary 26. Base price for it with twin Yamaha F200s is $130,395. Regulator Marine, Edenton, N.C. 252-482-3837; www.regulatormarine.com.
