For the new Santa Cruz 37 the term "racer-cruiser" fits to a tee. This sleek, low-displacement boat is built using state-of-the art technologies and components, including a carbon-fiber hull, deck and spars and optional hydraulic-assisted lifting keel.

I saw this high-tech boat at the Newport International Boat Show, where it was judged among the best new boats. Unfortunately, I didn't get to sail it. But the SC37 includes features you'd expect from Tim Kernan, a California-based designer known for high-performance racing boats, including twin pedestal carbon-fiber wheels and a balanced and race-faired retractable rudder.

Belowdecks the main saloon has 6 feet 3 inches of headroom. The interior is finished in white with wood accents and wood cabin soles. The L-shaped galley to port has a twin-burner propane stove with an oven and a stainless steel sink. The nav station to starboard includes a lifting table with chart storage and cabinetry for electronics. Port and starboard settees, with storage underneath, flank a drop-leaf table.
The enclosed ventilated head compartment features a vanity sink, mirrored sliders and a flushing toilet. Wood-trimmed doors access the head compartment from the main saloon or the forward stateroom, where there's a double V-berth, a hanging locker and a dressing seat.

The keel-stepped carbon-fiber mast and 5-foot retractable bowsprit are from Selden Spars. Running rigging includes tapered Dyneema halyards and low-stretch control lines. Santa Cruz Yachts, Green Cove Springs, Fla.; 888-723-2781; www.santacruzyachts.com
