Fall is a favorite time for Maryland native Matt Whitehair, Executive Chef at the casually elegant Osprey Point Restaurant.  He especially likes preparing fresh game to add to the menu. The menu changes monthly and is adjusted daily to reflect the freshest available in meats, seafood, and produce.  One of Chef's most important suppliers is Chester River Seafood; it's not unusual for him to get a 4AM call offering him the best of the day's catch.  This year, the Osprey kitchen staff has planted its own garden on the grounds, and most of the vegetables served come from there.  When the restaurant is closed in January, Chef and his sous chefs try out a variety of new recipes in preparation for the coming season.  This past winter, they began curing items like bacon, pancetta, and pickles. The resulting charcuterie is one of the more popular items appearing on the menu now. Chef Whitehair began his career in Chestertown MD, moved to Boston to hone his skills at Sasso Back Bay, and then returned to the Eastern Shore as sous chef, then Executive Chef at Osprey Point.  Diners will usually be treated to a visit by the charming Chef Whitehair, checking on his guests to be sure they are happy with the food and service.

From March Channel 9:

Herrington Harbor, owned by Stuart and Hamilton Chaney, has won the first DNR Maryland Marina of the Year Award. Runners-up were Spring Cove Marina in Solomons and Tidewater Yacht Service Center in Baltimore. Herrington Harbor was singled out for creating four acres of tidal wetlands, setting aside 600 acres in preservation, cultivating oysters and installing buffers to filter stormwater.

Last year, Tidewater Yacht Marina in Hampton discovered that its 170-foot-long megayacht dock just wasn't mega enough to accommodate all of the megayachts that wanted to stop over. The marina hosted 75 vessels of over 90 feet in length last year, but had to turn a number of others away. So over the winter, Tidewater added another 100 feet to its megayacht dock and some mega-powerful electrical receptacles, including a couple of 100-amp three-phase 480 volt plug-ins. Tidewater also increased its fuel-delivery speed to more than 40 gallons a minute.

Windmill Point Marina, which occupies an enviable position at the north entrance to the Rappahannock River, has been purchased by Vinings Marine Group. Over the past few years, the 150-slip marina has had a complete face-lift, with new floating docks, bathhouse, restaurant and swimming pool, but has continued to struggle financially. The purchase by Vining, which owns six other Bay marinas, including three in Little Creek, should finally put Windmill Point on a solid footing.

Another perennially troubled marina with a prime location is Coles Point Plantation in Westmoreland County, Va. The 182-slip marina was purchased by Blackbeard Pond Partnership, a group of investors that include Jamie Hamilton and Taylor Burke, owner of Tantallon Marina in Fort Washington.

The former Mark's Marina on the South River has been purchased by Boyd Tomkies, owner of Annapolis Inflatables. The small 36-slip facility has been spruced up and reopened this winter as The Marina.

Two Bohemia River marinas are now under the management of Texas-based Marinas International. Bohemia Vista, with 141 slips, and Hack's Point Marina, with 85, are both owned by CNL Financial Group of Orlando. Marinas International manages more than 30 marinas around the country.

Herrington Harbour Marinas have been awarded the inaugural Clean Marina of the Year Award by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR). Owners Steuart and Hamilton Chaney received the honor at a January ceremony in Annapolis. They were chosen based on their demonstrated excellence in the overall cleanliness of the facilities, environmental services offered, and by communicating and enforcing clean marina practices. The Maryland Clean Marina initiative recognizes and promotes marinas, boatyards, and yacht clubs that meet legal requirements and voluntarily adopt pollution prevention practices.  As of late 2009, DNR has certified nearly 25% of Maryland's estimated 600 marinas as Clean Marinas or Clean Marina Partners.

"Implementing and maintaining Clean Marina practices is good for the environment and good for business," said  Steuart Chaney.  For over three decades, the first consideration when making any decision is, "how will this decision improve the environment?", he added.  "Undoubtedly, Herrington Harbour is like no other marina in Maryland," said Donna Morrow, Program Chief of Maryland DNR Boating Services.

Deltaville Boatyard hauls, repairs and re-fits boats of all shapes and sizes with their staff of ABYC Master Technicians. Maintaining a professional, sophisticated-but-not-complicated approach to yacht repairs, refits and maintenance has put their services in high demand. Coupled with their excellent customer service and the quaintness that the community of Deltaville provides, Deltaville Boatyard is an excellent location for service work to be performed.

To increase its effectiveness and to accommodate all of their customers' needs, Deltaville Boatyard recently unveiled their new 75-ton marine travel lift. The new 75-ton lift compliments their existing 35-ton lift. With a beam capacity of 25 feet, the new behemoth lift will handle the longer, heavier and wider boats, that are becoming a larger portion of the industry in the recreational boating business.

"The number of larger sized vessels traveling the Chesapeake Bay and inland waterways has increased in recent years, and many loyal customers have been asking when Deltaville Boatyard will be able to haul their boats" said President Keith Ruse.

The substantial investment is already paying off. "We have been receiving calls from boaters bringing their vessels to the Bay and to Deltaville Boatyard for hurricane season now that we have the lift to accommodate them. We're excited by the addition of our new travel lift and what it means for our future," said Ruse.

The new travel lift is a big investment not only for the Deltaville Boatyard and Marina, but for the surrounding community as well. "Servicing larger vessels means more jobs," said Vice President of Operations Matt Holloway.

Deltaville Boatyard is an ABYC Standards Certified yacht repair facility located in the heart of the Chesapeake Bay. For additional information on their services offered visit them online at DeltavilleBoatyard.com, or call 804-776-8900.

CATALINA YACHTS announced the launch of the Catalina 355.  The qualities admired in Catalina's award winning 445- a versatile performer that is fast, comfortable, spacious and safe- formed the basis of Catalina's newest 35' 5" vessel.  The design has a handsome, low-profile cabin structure with a long waterline and moderate beam and freeboard. The Catalina 355 will debut at the U.S. Sailboat Show in Annapolis, Md on October 7-11, 2010.

"The new style and design features we presented with the 445 were so well received , that we decided to carry those design elements forward while fulfilling the demand for a mid- 30's performer," said Gerry Douglas, vice- president and chief engineer for Catalina.

A five- foot long traveler creates precise mainsail control.  Six inboard shrouds are secured to Catalina's signature "ball and socket' chain plates and tie rods for critical load resolution and to create watertight integrity.  Long inboard genoa tracks accommodate headsails from a powerful 155% genoa to a storm jib, allowing the sail plan to be balanced in all wind conditions.  The inboard shrouds and hardware facilitates tighter sheeting angles for upwind performance and wide, unobstructed weather decks for safety.  Another added safety feature is a watertight •collision' bulkhead aft of the anchor locker.

Below decks, the interior is constructed of teak and teak veneers, hand- finished with clear varnishes. A navigation desk with a recessed laptop computer compartment has dedicated power ports.  An available quad- leaf folding table sets a group, and the port side dinette easily converts to a single berth or settee.  The owner's cabin has a custom, articulating innerspring mattress; an electric lifter is available for comfortable reading or viewing TV.

The Catalina 355 conforms to the recommendations and standards of the ABYC and IMCI Category A requirements. The base price of a Catalina 355 is $165,450 FOB, Largo, Florida.

The CHESAPEAKE SEAWARD ASSOCIATION (CSA) was founded 2008 by David Newell, Lyle Ward, Jim Neidhart, and Steve Feinstone.  Since that time, the membership has grown to an even dozen members.  The club is just over two years old at this time; it is a great place to exchange ideas and to just enjoy other Seaward owners.  Steve Feinstone, a 32RK Owner is the club Commodore.  Lyle Ward has recently taken on the duties of Secretary and Treasurer. Ward also takes care of the minutes, and all the other administrative duties that go with an organization like the CSA.  At this time we have members with boats ranging from the S25s, to 26RKs, and 32RKs.  The CSA club welcomes all Seaward owners who are on the Chesapeake, or who may sail or plan to sail the Chesapeake.

The club holds an annual winter meeting at Buddy's Crab House on Main Street in Annapolis. There, they can join together to talk about their Seaward Yachts and have lunch.  Last October during the Annapolis Sailboat Show, we had a large gathering of the membership at Steve's place on the Rhode River. Several members sailed in with Jim Neidhart, coming up all the way from the James River with his brother and a friend.  Others came by their land yachts. The highlight of that activity was the ribs and beer dinner, hosted by Hake Yachts, which was greatly enjoyed and appreciated by everyone who attended.

Anyone who is interested in joining the CSA, please email Steve at  sfeinstone@comcast.net

With all the skinny water in the Bay, shoal draft and the SEAWARD RK'S are the ideal boats. We believe there are many more Seaward owners on the Bay that we would like to welcome to the CSA. For more information on Seaward Sailboats please contact Tim De Vries at  tdevries@hakeyachts.com

This will give us an opportunity to cut overhead and at the same time combine our sales, service, parts and marina operations, which will in effect help us manage better, and offer our customers the best possible buying experience. We will also be in a better position to pass on savings to our customers due to lower expenses."

Clarks Landing now operates from two waterfront locations, one in Chester and the other in Shady Side, Maryland. Both facilities offer complete parts and service, winter and summer storage and haul out capacities to 70ft. Last year, South Jersey launched a new boat show specifically designed to appeal to the serious boat buyer. As its name applies, STRICTLY JERSEY was open to New Jersey based boat manufacturers, dealers and companies that furnish products and services used by New Jersey's boaters. All together, some 23 manufacturers and dealers, and 28 land based vendors participated in the show.

Small by design, Strictly Jersey has taken a different approach to making sales for the State's boating industry. After all, New Jersey is the heart of boating in the Mid-Atlantic region with numerous manufacturers, dealers and businesses. The Show Organizers have invited like minded New Jersey Dealers and related businesses to join with them in promoting their products to buyers who are truly interested in them and have the financial resources or purchase them.

In a nutshell, the goal continues to be to produce a show that is strictly for boaters. This simple formula proved to be successful in 2009 and drove the decision to host a 2010 event.

Who will be exhibiting? New Jersey based boat manufacturers, dealers and businesses that are in the business of selling boating related products or services to New Jersey's recreational boaters and fishermen.

Who is the targeted audience? This is a boat show designed for knowledgeable and qualified buyers, who are serious about upgrading to a new boat or refitting their existing boats. Every in-water slip will accommodate sea trials, at dealer discretion.

When is it? This is a three day show, Friday through Sunday, April 30, May 1 & 2, 2010. Gates will be open from 10:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. everyday.

Where is it? South Jersey Marina in Cape May will host the event.

What is the cost? Complimentary tickets are available from participating dealers and manufacturers. The Organizers have made it possible for qualified New Jersey boaters (holders of a valid New Jersey safe boating certificate or Sea Tow Membership) to attend the show, free of charge. The non-boating public is welcome to attend the show. Admission at the gate will once again be $15.00 per person.

For more information including an up-to-date list of participating dealers and exhibitors, please see the web site: www.StrictlyJersey.com. Interested exhibitors should contact the Show Manager, Mark Allen,  mallen@StrictlyJersey.com or  609-884-2400

CLARKS LANDING, Maryland's largest boat retailer recently sold their showroom facility on Kent Island and moved that sales operation to their waterfront marina located 3 miles south in Chester.

According to Jeff Truesdale, Managing Partner at Clarks Landing "This was a difficult decision for us. Over the past ten years our showroom has become a focal point for people driving by on route 50. It really brought a lot of attention to our boat dealership," continued Jeff Truesdale. "At this time it just made practical sense to relocate. This will give us an opportunity to cut overhead and at the same time combine our sales, service, parts and marina operations together, which will in effect help us manage better and offer our customers the best possible buying experience. We will also be in a better position to pass on savings to our customers due to lower expenses."

Clarks Landing now operates out of two waterfront locations, one in Chester and the other in Shady Side, Maryland. Both facilities offer complete marine parts and service, winter and summer storage and haul out capacities to 70ft. They have eight certified marine technicians and one master technician, representing Mercruiser, Volvo Penta, OMC, Sea Ray, Cruisers, Silverton, and Carver.

You can contact Clarks Landing at the Chester Marine Center by calling 410-643-2694, or Shady Side Marine Center by calling  410-867-9550 or visit them on their website at   www.clarkslanding.com
