The Association of Marina Industries (AMI) formed an affiliate agreement with the Virginia Marine Trades Association (VMTA) so that every marina and boatyard member of VMTA will automatically become AMI members. AMI will manage the association. By bringing the benefits of AMI to its membership, VMTA hopes to attract more marinas to their group and, in turn, build a stronger association. "Virginia has long had a marine trades association, but it is time to have one that better reflects today's marine businesses, and can provide the service and assistance that the modern marine industry requires." said Keith Ruse, President of VMTA.

Piney Narrows Yacht Haven, located in Kent Narrows, has been awarded the 2013 Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Clean Marina of the Year Award. Among the more than 150 marinas registered, Piney Narrows was chosen in the Large Marina Category. Piney Narrows has been certified as a Clean Marina since 2001, and it is one of 10 facilities operated by Coastal Properties Management.

The Annapolis Boat Shows announced the winners of their 2014 Poster Contest for the Bay Bridge Boat Show and the Annapolis Spring Sailboat Show. Both artists are from Annapolis. A watercolor by 12-year-old Brenna Litynski was chosen to represent the Bay Bridge Boat Show. Ms. Litynski plans to donate proceeds from the auction of her artwork at this show to the Veterans Artist Program. Kaeli Smith, a professional artist with her own design company and student at the Univ. of Delaware, created the Annapolis Spring Sailboat Show poster. Her multidimensional technique is reproduced in a Giclee print. Both winners will display their artwork at the respective boat shows and signed posters will be available for purchase.

Sail Solomons co-owners and instructors Andy Batchelor and Lisa Batchelor Frailey were each named "Outstanding Instructor for 2013" by the American Sailing Association (ASA). The award recognizes the top one percent of over 2,000 ASA sailing instructors worldwide, and is based upon responses from 2013 student surveys regarding the quality of service and instruction. Sail Solomons Sailing School opened in 2007, and their instructors have been awarded each year since 2007, making Sail Solomons the most recognized sailing school on the Chesapeake Bay. Personal property tax is based on where your boat is docked, not where you live.

DOZIER'S WATERWAY GUIDE, the series of navigational and local interest publications for cruisers and boaters, was sold to Richmond, Va.-based Jeff and Kathryn Jones. Immediate plans are to enlarge and update the content of the publications, revise the website and mature its mobile platforms. Integrating content into navigational software is under development.

The INTERNATIONAL MARINA INSTITUTE, the training subsidiary of the Association of Marina Industries, awarded eight marina professionals as Certified Marina Managers (CMM) at the 2014 International Marina & Boatyard Conference in Ft. Lauderdale, Fl., on January 30. The CMM designation recognizes and distinguishes the most highly qualified marina managers throughout the world. On the Chesapeake, the newest CMMs include Nancy Booth of Hartge Yacht Harbor (Galesville, Md.), and Brad Wilson of Mears Great Oak Landing (Chestertown, Md.).

Jonathan Jones, recently retired general manger and executive vice president of HAVEN HARBOUR MARINA in Rock Hall, Md. is the 2014 recipient of the American Boat Builders & Repairers Association prestigious Dennis Snow President's Award, given for significant and lasting contributions to the industry. The award was presented at the ABBRA Annual Awards Dinner & Annual Meeting held in January in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Jones is a former member of the ABBRA Board of Directors, and Past- President of the organization. Annapolis Yacht Sales announced the addition of Gregg Cohen as Sales Manager for the Power Division of Annapolis Yacht Sales. He will be based out of the power sales office in Annapolis, Md., located in Bert Jabin Yacht Yard. Cohen will head up all new boat sales for Beneteau power, Greenline, Steiger Craft and Vanquish boats. He has been in the yacht sales business for 25 years, with experience in both domestic and foreign brands of production and custom class boats of all sizes. Port Annapolis Marina is expanding and announces personnel changes in several positions of their service department and ship's store. The American Boat & Yacht Council (ABYC) won the International BoatBuilders' Exhibition and Conference (IBEX) Innovation Award for Safety Equipment for the Boating Safety App "Boat Essentials-USCG Safety Gear." The award was announced on September 17, 2013 at IBEX in Louisville, Kentucky. The free app is a simple checklist for boaters to identify the required and recommended safety items to have on board. The checklist is also available in paper form and copies can be requested by calling ABYC.

The Smithfield Station, on Sept. 21, 2013, in Smithfield, Va, will be hosting an event honoring the heritage of the Chesapeake Bay Deadrises that were built at the Mariners Museum in Newport News, Va. There will also be other Jimmy Drewery-built boats attending including Harry Barrett's Hidden Secret and three Willard Norris boats. There will be events on Saturday, from oyster tonging demonstrations to a Mariner Boat Parade on the Pagan River. The 33rd Annual Poquoson Seafood Festival will be held October 18-20, in Poquoson Municipal Park, 830 Poquoson Avenue, Poquoson, Va. Baltimore Marine Centers (BMC), the operator of five marine facilities around the Inner Harbor, has joined forces with three marinas in Annapolis to provide customers in both cities with lower rates that are not offered to the public.

Annual slip holders at Annapolis Maryland Capital Yacht Club, Chesapeake Harbour Marina and Orchard Beach Marina, all in the Annapolis area and owned/operated by Trident Marine Group, will now receive discounts at all BMC locations. Annual slip holders at any BMC facility can also enjoy the three Annapolis marinas at discounted rates.

Nick Jones, of Bay Shore Marine in Annapolis, is now a certified master marine technician in Corrosion, having completed coursework with the American Boat & Yacht Council earlier this year. He also holds certifications from ABYC in diesel engines and marine electronics, and various accreditations from Yanmar. Nick began working at Bay Shore in 2006, and he is currently involved with many of their engine and generator installations.

Norview Marina in Deltaville, Virginia hosts the third annual Middle Bay Boat Show, a land and in-water event taking place May 4, from 10am to 6pm and May 5, from 11am to 5pm, rain or shine. Last year's show drew nearly 1,200 visitors. "This is the only show of its kind in the Middle Bay and has grown since the inaugural event in 2011. This year, we are celebrating the trade-marking of Deltaville as "The Boating Capitol of the Chesapeake Bay", said Ernie Asaff, owner of Norview Marina.  "On the 4th and 5th of May, Deltaville will also host Deltaville Dealer Days, an open house at several marinas in the area. Featuring speakers from Norton Yachts Service and Raymarine Electronics Department, Sea Hawk Paints, Latell Sailmakers, and Norton's Sailing School instructor, Captain Steve Runals, the seminar concluded with a Q&A session with a panel of experts. Afterwards, a contingent from the Hunter Sailing Association, Station 1 from the Middle Bay area met with a group interested in the formation of a HSA Southern Bay Association. Norton Yachts is dedicated to promoting associations made up of Hunter Owners and Jeanneau Owners on the Chesapeake Bay.

Havre de Grace Marina and Log Pond Marina are now officially known as Havre de Grace Marine Center. Located at the corner of Erie and Water Streets, Havre de Grace Marina offers floating dock slips and moorings for boats and jet skis, as well as new and pre-owned boat sales. Log Pond Marina, along the waterfront at the base of Girard Street, has been in operation since 1990, and offers dockage for larger boats. Both marinas feature slips for transients.

New owners, Chris and Lachelle Scarlato, have acquired the family-run business that was established in 1956 from Arvid and Donna Scherpf. Havre de Grace Marine Center offers full service boat repairs, including a canvas and sail shop. Tidewater Yacht Service Center at Port Covington Maritime Center in Baltimore, Maryland, was named winner of the 2012 Maryland Clean Marina contest in the large boatyard category. The business was commended by the Dept. of Natural Resources for taking steps to protect the environment. The boatyard was certified a Clean Marina by the state in 2008 and was a runner-up last year for the annual honor. The program, started in 1997, has inspected and certified about 600 marinas.

Annapolis Yacht Sales sees a bright future for the Chesapeake Bay boating market and has responded by adding new staff members to their team. Aaron Moeller, Belinda Magruder, John Halt, and Ian Dimka have been hired as yacht brokers. In addition, they have added new support staff positions, including Gayle Parlett in accounting and Lorie Ebersberger in marketing. The service department has also added Stuart Sohovich as a yacht service technician; and Brad Dawson, Omar Bernal, and Susana Bernal have been hired to start a new yacht detailing division. Sail Solomons has been named "Outstanding School for 2012" by the American Sailing Association (ASA). The award recognizes the top 20 of over 300 ASA sailing schools worldwide, and is based upon responses from 2012 student surveys regarding the quality of service, boats, and instruction. Sail Solomons co-owners and instructors Andy Batchelor and Lisa Batchelor Frailey were each named "Outstanding Instructor for 2012", an award that recognizes the top one percent of over 2,000 ASA sailing instructors. Sail Solomons Sailing School opened in 2007, and has received the Outstanding School award every year from 2008 through 2012. Their instructors have been awarded each year since 2007, making Sail Solomons the most recognized sailing school on the Chesapeake Bay. Eric Hervol of Seattle, Washington, has joined the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum (CBMM) in St. Michaels, Maryland, as a shipwright apprentice. Hervol's apprenticeship begins with restoration work on the historic skipjack Rosie Parks. During his one-year CBMM apprenticeship, he will be living in St. Michaels. Hervol recently completed a nine-month diploma program at the Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding in Port Hadlock, Washington.

Through educational, cultural and interactive exhibits and activities, CBMM celebrates the connections between the Bay and its people while inspiring an understanding of and appreciation for the rich maritime heritage of the Chesapeake Bay and its tidal reaches. "Dee was recognized as the face and voice of the boat shows in the Annapolis area, and was an inspirational leader in the maritime industry through her tenure," said Ed Hartman, president of USYS. After 13 years Garth and Sue Hichens are handing over the tiller of Annapolis Yacht Sales to a new team. The new owners are Rob Taishoff, longtime customer and friend; Tim Wilbricht, on the sales side of AYS for 14 years; and Chris Humphreys, on the service side for 17 years. The Marine Trades Association of Baltimore County made their Christmas donation of $1,000 to the New Jersey Marine Trades Association. Their gift will aid and support fellow Tradesmen devastated by Hurricane Sandy. Their contribution was matched by Kellogg Marine.

The last Leopard 46 built in Cape Town, South Africa has sailed on her own bottom to Florida and will be in the Chesapeake Bay this spring. One hundred ninety-one of these popular cruising catamarans were built and at 46'4" LOA with a 24'10" beam, are rather large yachts. The new owners are sailing her through the Florida Keys over the winter and plan to bring her to her new home on the Chesapeake Bay in April.

The new Leopard 48 has been named by Cruising World magazine as Boat of the Year, Best Full-sized Multihull, 2013. Since 1998, Leopard catamarans have earned eight BOTY awards from Cruising World and three from Sail magazine. Sail named the Leopard 44, 38, and 40 "Best Boats" of 2012, 2010 and 2005, respectively. Cruising World named various Leopard models Boat of the Year in these categories: Charter Yacht (1998), Best Multihull 40 Feet and Under (2005), Best Import (2005), Best Multihull Cruiser (2010), Import of the Year (2010), Best Multihull (2012), Import of the Year (2012), and Best Full-size Multihull (2013).

What started as a spur of the moment remark by a local business owner has turned into a major relief effort to help those affected by Hurricane Sandy. Jim Maier, owner of BOE Marine in Stevensville, Md., offered to drive a truck filled with supplies to New Jersey areas that had been devastated by the hurricane. He asked for monetary donations that he would use to purchase desperately needed supplies.

Through BOE and other local businesses pulling together, five truckloads of supplies have been delivered, and the group says they will continue to send supply trucks until they run out of donations or there is no longer a need. Using larger trucks from BOE's distribution company, MESCO, they have delivered water, heaters, clothing, non-perishable food, batteries, lights and many other items to the hard hit New Jersey coastline.
