The Chesapeake Bay Crabbiest Cookbook

The Chesapeake Bay Crabbiest Cookbook - by Whitey Schmidt, 234 pages, $29.95, Marian Hartnett Press, Crisfield, Md.

With the holidays upon us, we thought it appropriate to include at least one bible on our seasonal reading list. This book contains the gospel according to Whitey Schmidt (our very own Crab Lab columnist). And, of course, the topic is crabs-and only crabs. In his most substantial cookbook to date (and his first hardbound effort) Schmidt provides 210 recipes all tested and tasted in his Crisfield, Md. “Crab Lab.” You’ll learn how to make Battle Creek Crab Linguine, Eagle Harbor Seafood Stew and Buy Boat Crab Cioppino, along with a couple hundred other delights.

As wonderful as the recipes are, they’re only part of the package. In the course of his decades-long culinary career, Schmidt has taken countless photos of regional “crabicana,” and one adorns every page of this book. Included are snaps of crab art, crabhouse signs, crab tatoos and off-beat stuff like the crab-adorned cast wrapped around Schmidt’s pal Joe Keidel’s broken leg.
