Maritime art isn’t just for museums anymore. Any Chesapeake port worth its brine has at least one gallery specializing in works by maritime artists. And the popularity of the art form has prompted one tour boat company to launch a series of cruises this year with Bay marine artists onboard as featured celebrities.
Five maritime artists-including a photographer, oil painters and a multimedia artist-are the featured guests on a series of day cruises this spring aboard the 65-foot motoryacht Annapolitan II. Collectively dubbed the Maritime Artists’ Showcase, the schedule of cruises includes: photographer and author Heather Davidson, who specializes in images of watermen, on a May 31 cruise to Rock Hall; wildlife and waterscape oil painter M. Joyce Zeigler on a June 1 cruise to St. Michaels; multimedia artist Kathryn Leonard, whose work features sailboats and yacht racing, on a June 15 cruise to St. Michaels; and Brian Hope, whose oil paintings depict military and merchant ships, on a June 19 cruise to Baltimore. A planned cruise with Annapolis photographer Marion Warren had not been scheduled at press time.
