Skipjack Mania in Reedville

Recently rediscovered photographs of skipjacks racing at Deal Island 35 years ago highlight “Preserving Our Skipjacks,” a summer exhibit at the Reedville Fishermen’s Museum in Reedville, Va. Taken by Bill Peterson, now a Florida cinematographer, the images (such as the one above) show more than a dozen boats at the 1967 races. “Preserving Our Skipjacks” was inspired by three restorations undertaken on Virginia’s Northern Neck this year: the Wilma Lee, the Virginia W and the museum’s own Claud W. Somers. All are featured in the exhibit, which runs through September 1.
