The Dismal Swamp Canal is slated for closure this month.
Someone may have pulled a miracle out of his sleeve by the time you read this, but as this issue went to press, the word was that operational funds for the Dismal Swamp Canal, a popular route along the Intracoastal Waterway, had been completely deleted from the federal budget. Stopgap measures initiated by the Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, kept the ditch open through December 31.
Canal supporters continue to lobby Congress for full funding of the historic waterway, and they remain optimistic that with the presidential election over, a new budget will be in the offing-one that includes Dismal dollars. Interested boaters should contact their Congressional reps to keep the pressure on.
