Here Comes Santa Claus . . . and Friends

We all know Santa as a fun-loving guy. Heck, he’s got a gaggle of elves and a toy workshop-what’s not fun about that? But the jolly old fellow apparently has quite another playful side, one that can send chills up your spine: Santa’s a water-skier.

For the past 20 years, before starting his Christmas Eve toy-distributing tour, he’s been heading to Washington, D.C., for a little water-skiing fix on the Potomac River. And it’s not just Santa who’s got the bug-he brings along his elves (wakeboarding fanatics, we hear), his reindeers (they drive the ski boat) and Frosty the Snowman (in his dinghy). Even Mrs. Claus joins in. And wouldn’t you know? There’s the Grinch on his Jet Ski, trying to spoil the fun.

Spectators can watch this Christmas Eve spectacle from Lady Bird Johnson Park off the George Washington Parkway on the Virginia side of the Potomac. The action begins at 1 p.m. Best of all, Santa and his retinue hang around before and after the show for meeting, greeting and pictures at the Columbia Island Marina concession building (free parking). And since he’s Santa, you can be sure he’ll be there rain, snow or shine. If you don’t believe us, just visit to see for yourself.
