We’re so proud of Martha LeGrand we could just pop! Our intrepid editor at large, whose byline you often see on these pages (invariably attached to worthwhile reading), has won the coveted West Marine Writers Award. The $5,000 prize is essentially the “best in show” award from the annual Boating Writers International (BWI) writing competition.
Marty’s September 2004 article, “Back In Business,” the story of three marinas getting back on their feet in the wake of Hurricane Isabel, won third place in the “News and Analysis” category of the 2005 BWI awards. But the judges for the West Marine Award-faculty members from Northwestern University’s prestigious Medill School of Journalism-unanimously selected “Back In Business” as the very best of the 2005 winners. The award was supposed to have been presented in October at the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show, but those plans were dashed by . . . you guessed it, a hurricane.
As this issue went to press, Marty was packing her bags to go to the Miami International Boat Show to accept the award. If it were up to us, there would also be a ticker-tape parade down Collins Avenue.
