Chesapeake Bay Magazine's Talk of the Bay

We have it on good authority, ladies and gentlemen, that the delightfully warm temperatures we’ve been experiencing recently are part of a climatological phenomenon that the experts refer to as "spring." It is not, repeat, not a cruel trick, not like that time back in March, when we had warmish weather for about ten minutes . . . and then it snowed. No, our experts assure us that this time it will last a while--months even, and that it will likely progress into something they call "summer."

So, warm-weather lovers, all the more reason to celebrate that the May issue of Chesapeake Bay Magazine is on its way to you right now! Senior editor Jody Schroath, ever on the go in either her sailing cat Zen or in one of the Chesapeake Boating Club's Albin trawlers (Liberty, Journey, or Venture), gives us a "Cambridge Education" this month--a lively visit that ever-evolving city on the Choptank. You can read the story here.

This being our anniversary month, we thought it fitting that we offer a visual celebration of the 40-plus-year artistic career of the magazine’s founder, Richard C. (Dick) Goertemiller. Look for our six-page spread of some of Dick’s finest watercolor Bay scenes from over the years--dating back to the very first issue of the magazine in May of 1971. Read our tribute to Mr. Goertemiller and view some of our favorite illustrations here.

Also in the May issue, John Page Williams, our fishing guru lo these many years, introduces us to Tangier Island’s last boatbuilder, Jerry Frank Pruitt--who is retired now, though you couldn’t tell by tagging along with him on a busy day of oyster commerce on his buyboat, the Delvin K.
